Is getting a doctorate in economics worth it in the western world if I don't want to teach or sell out to the feds? I'm currently getting an MIS degree with a minor in economics going into IT or data analytics, but it's my dream to be an economist that does research, maybe for a private company.

this is almost always why you get an econ phd. Check all the top pograms, 95% of graduates go to academics or something like World Bank. If not they go to one of very few firms that likes having phds like edgeworth or aqr. Just get a research based position with a masters

I'm not sure how this works in social sciences but in hard sciences the unis are literally decades ahead in research of any private company. Only difference is private companies of course pay lot more but the type of research might be less satisfying.
