Students could have learned their teacher doesn't have a very high opinion of them.
It's not so easy at it seems though, because maybe the teacher asked the question intentionally to test their patience.
Students on the other hand could have intentionally avoided reactions precisely because they understood the real intentions of their teacher.
Class and teacher stare each other in the eyes, unable to understand who is telling the truth and who is not.
