Insects

It's the single most energy-efficient and environmentally healthy way to harvest protein.
But when I said this in a forum site, I got bombed by down votes and no amount of scientific studies managed to convince them.

They screamed at me that the idea is sickening, degrading, and inhumane and that's all the argument they have

As a consumer, peanut butter, supplemented with whey protein is about the cheapest most efficient option. Things like lentils and beans and rice are also relatively cheap and efficient. I've never tried or priced insects or grubs.

Insects are the best way of doing it. And I've had some insect replacements for proteins a few times and you can't tell at all. The most common one you'll likely encounter at the moment is "cricket flour". It's literally just used as flour and it works identical to all purpose for a variety of uses and you can't tell the difference whatsoever.

It would be unfair to do that

80% of the world eats insects but never had an epidemic brought by farming insects. There are 3 main farmed animals in the western world - all of which brought epidemics of their own

But rice consumes quite a hefy lot of water causes huge soil degredation over time. Not to mention the amount of forests you have to clear and terraform just to have a big enough of a field.
