But it's also not clear to me whether that shrinkage is due to an ageing effect, or just the accumulation of physical damage. E.g. if someone spends their whole life engaging in some behavior that gradually costs them more and more brain cells, they're going to be worse off at 80 years old than 40 years old.
Also, the body reduces metabolism BECAUSE it reduces cancer risk. Cancer comes from mutation and cellular division. More cells = more chance of cancer. The creation of more new cells = more chance one of them is a cancer mutation.
