the field of AI is fine - the study of what learning is in both a theoretical and practical sense, and how to use this understanding to devise algorithms that solve problems based on data sets is fine. ML might have some meme papers, but CLT / SLT papers are fine. Do you have any cogent arguments based on experience or are you spouting out a basic understanding of what "AI research" looks like?

Exactly. Tech losers think if you make a computer powerful enough and give it a clever enough algorithm all of a sudden it will just automatically have "consciousness." I'm not claiming to fully understand consciousness, but I think it's reasonable to think it is a state intentionally created by our brains. I reviewed a paper recently where they used a certain firm of neural network to model results from a simulation and they were boasting about how it was the first time someone did it like that and that AI like this will revolutionize the field.
Their analysis sucked though.

You also meant "in front of the screen".

Additionally, the meaning of AI changed recently. They nowadays refer to "programs that mimick human behavior without being explicitly programmed for it" as AI.

If a computer were to be wired just like your brain (which is obviously unreasonable with the current scale of computers), for what reason would it not be conscious? What inherent property do the electrical and chemical signals or states in your brain have that a computer does not possess?

How would you even know whether a computer - or any being other than yourself, for that matter - would be sentient? Would them claiming to be and acting like it be enough?

That's where the Turing test comes in, which is somewhat reasonable since we can't objectively measure consciousness whether as a degree or state - we have no exhaustive definition. If something appears to act of it's own volition and adapts to situations then it wouldn't be too far fetched to say it possess some degree of consciousness.

AI is nothing more than refined automated statistical methods. But I will say that there are institutions and firms out there with very advanced, proprietary methods that they don't share with the outside world. But it's not super advanced stuff like Skynet.

I think the Turing test is just a cope for not currently having a measure or understanding of consciousness. Which I believe will eventually happen in science. And no I think consciousness is more than electrical signals and calculations. Roger penrose actually thinks there might be physical structure where consciousness might occur like the microtubuals. To me consciousness seems like such a bizarre phenomenon and only makes sense if the brain is intentionally creating it. But I could be wrong I suppose

AI (assuming it means sapience and sentience in this case) could be possible. The main thing to do is mimic the infantile brain, which grows and matures. We could replicate it by simply translating the DNA of the brain cells into instructions, which could then be turned into programming. The human brain itself has 3.5 PB of memory, but a huge bulk of that memory is simply for high quality and resolution, and we could probably compress the AI's memory requirements greatly.
The reason we don't have sentient machines is because we've been doing them wrong.
