is it possible to replace our consciousness with one great consciousness/hyper intelligence?

within our lifetimes?
why would we even want to do that?
Does it frighten you, it frightens me, machines have no implicit drives they have no reason to live because nothing compels them to, this of course undermines my own compulsion to exist.
