Vit D in countries with very little sun. But I would say blue eyes and red hair were probably sexually selected for more than there being a clear survival aspect to it. Because given a certain body/facial type, being a ginger can greatly enhance attractiveness. But obviously an uggo face will become even uglier when manifested as the ginger phenotype. This "multiplying" effect of gingerness is well documented, but scientifically poorly understood. But the outcome is clear, gingers have far greater average attractiveness despite the tremendous ginger uggos.
