I think the natural evolution is-
carpentry
engineering (metals and more complex moving parts)
electrical engineering (electronic power and control)
computer science (increasingly intelligent autonomous devices)

I started a BSc thinking hurr durr I'm too smart for engineering, but I think I'd have found robotics engineering a lot more fun.
