Does anyone here have any stories either personal or of people they know that have given up on their dreams of becoming successful in STEM and just decided to take on a simpler life?
I've read a thread a while back about people who were med-school hopefuls and realized half-way through their undergrad or even in medschool that they simply weren't cut out for it (either willingly or unwillingly). Basically what are the internal challenges and dialogue you had with yourself?
Could you accept simply becoming a warehouse worker or some tradesman or an army guy or some skilled craftsman? Not worrying about the current global issues affecting society or the economy -- not doing constant research in your spare time but enjoying a few beers and some dumb sitcom before dowsing off for the day ? Would you still be happy with that or do you truly believe your only calling in life is Scientific and being a smart nerd?
I've always liked the idea of being "the idea guy" and being smart and educated and on the forefront of everyday issues. I think I've determined that I may just be fighting an uphill battle and I'd be happier just being a technician on some mechanical system or a plumber or something like that.
