Cant you make your own ferrofluid by dumping a bunch of iron filings into some motor oil?
I saw a video where a guy did that with silly putty and was setting it next to some neodymium magnets and it looked like it was being attacked by the blob.

You can do that but the result isn't very good. NileRed has a video about his efforts to make good ferrofluid. It's a bit more complex than what you propose.
