He lives in a world in which chess is easy. It's not that he has a bigger "intelligence muscle" so to speak. It's that he understands the moves in such a way that they're obvious. If there was no such thing as chess, I wonder what he'd be doing.

Magnus would absolutely crush Fischer so hard it's not even funny. It'd be like putting a top tier nfl team from 50 years ago against one today. Not only does the disciplines advance, the development of talents also advance. There's a reason we see new records every year in athletics, chess is the same

Magnus would crush Fischer because chess has advanced a ridiculous amount since the introduction of chess engines. A player like Magnus can now beat Fischer with memorized opening lines, tactics, preparations, endgame strategies, ect that he got from studying chess engines. Give Fischer a lifetime of engine study and I bet he and Magnus would be very evenly matched.

Also, I'm not even sure about that. I've heard estimates that accounting for rating inflation, Fischer would be rated close to 3000.

Fair. But to use the NFL analogy, if you get a bunch of 50's players with no facemasks and shitty pads and put them against modern players with modern equipment they'd obviously get ass raped but it'd only tell you about the equipment used and not the players. I don't care about Fischer vs a chess engine, I care about Fischer vs Magnus.

According to Jeff Sonas chessmetrics, Fischer had 2895 (player who achieved the highest peak rating between 1840 and 2005).

This study is cool but they really don't mention anything with accounting for population structure and used fairly homogeneous samples. This leaves a lot of opening, particularly of note is the sharp rise in heritablity of intelligence as the child ages. This is interesting as it implies two possibilities:
1. Factors related to genetic intelligence activate later in life. (I find this unlikely due to how much early development is genetically controlled, but can't rule it out)
2. Heritable parenting patterns and socioeconomic factors are influencing the child's development get stronger as the child ages
