I'm not a biophysicist, just a normal physicist. But I googled "Helfrich functional" and it looks like it describes the curvature energy of membranes. Very similar to surface tension theory in fluids.

Seems pretty easy to look up and read on your own, OP.

You can't expect anyone else to know all about such an unused and obscure concept.
