I'm going to be taking my first course in real analysis this fall. Want to do some reading over the summer. Is Real Analysis by Jay Cummings any good? How does it compare to Abbott?

I've never read Cummings, but I've read Abbott, and I can tell you it's a stellar introductory book.

I can't comment on that book in particular but I used Abbott in conjunction with the textbook assigned for my course (I'm not going to say which one it is because it's horseshit and no teacher should use it). I think Abbott makes learning analysis very clear. If you want my honest opinion, you shouldn't try to teach yourself analysis. It's too difficult and dry without having the motivation of a class to kick you in the right direction. Rather, work through the first 3-5 chapters of Spivak and do EVERY problem. You'll have a much richer experience this summer that way.
