Hi /sci/, I was wondering if anyone knows the medical term for something that happens to me.

Sometimes when I'm starting a large meal, I start eating too quickly and food gets stuck mid-way in my oesophagus. I guess the oesophagus struggles to push down the large bolus of food I've swallowed. It causes discomfort, but if I wait a few seconds it will push the food down and the discomfort is gone.

I usually call this "indigestion" to people around me, but apparently indigestion means acid reflux (acid coming up from the stomach, into the oesophagus). I've never had that.

Anyone know if there is a medical term for what I'm having?

Could be anatomical pain in which the esophagus folds onto itself because it is too small. See a doctor and they may be able to massage the folds open that lasts up to a year. Rarely is the problem stomach related.

I don't think the oesophagus is folding. I'm certain it's what I described, the oesophagus just has trouble pushing down large boluses of food when I start a large meal and eat too quickly. So food just gets stuck there for a couple seconds and it's a bit discomforting but then it pushes the food down and it feels fine again.

And I don't need a doctor, it very rarely happens. It happened more when I was a teenager, when I ate big fast food meals. Another reason for it might be that the oesophagus is dry because I think it happens if I happened drunk any fluids for a while. It only ever happens at the beginning of a meal, and only if I start the meal too quickly. And it only happens once and then it doesn't happen for the rest of the meal. And as I say it's uncommon, I can't remember the last time it happened before today, I think probably years ago.

I was just curious what it's called because I'm sure other people get it too. It's not a big thing, just an occassional annoyance and nothing else, I was just wondering what the medical term for it is. I can't really find it online.

I've had this too and it wasn't stuck food, it was a reaction of my stomach to a large amount of histamines and on another occasion stress. Check those options out too.

I really don't think it's stress, I think it's just when I eat too quickly at the beginning of a meal, especially if I haven't eaten or drunk anything in a while, so maybe the oesophagus is a bit dry and maybe that contributes to the food not moving down.

It must have a medical name, but when I google it, I just find stuff about acid reflux or other oesophigeal conditions that are unrelated.

What's happening, I am pretty sure, is that the peristalsis is clearly struggling when I swallow a big bolus of dense food, probably having not chewed it properly, which can happen at the beginning of a meal if I'm eating too quickly, because I'm hungry. And I think it's particularly if I haven't drunk anything before the meal, thus making my oesophagus a bit dry (I don't know, maybe moisture is unrelated, I'm just guessing).

I've googled it and it looks like maybe "dysphagia" would be the right term, because it means difficulty swallowing, apparently. And I think this would include what I'm describing.

For years I've just called it indigestion to people around me, but clearly that's not what it's called if indigestion really means acid reflux. So I guess I could say "oh fuck, dysphagia" to the people around me, the next time it happens.

I'm surprised there isn't a common term for it, because I bet loads of people have this happen to them.

It felt like food getting stuck for me too, but it really was the end of the esophagus shutting the door (I could not vomit), causing gall to build up that transported the offending food up again.
The doctor didn't give it a name though.

Interesting, that must be a different issue to what I've had I think. I am certain that for me I'm just getting food stuck in my food pipe, when I take bites that are too large, don't chew them properly, and my food pipe is dry because I haven't drunk anything. It only happens rarely.
