Are fan blades a solved problem? Can you somewhat trivially design a fan for efficiency/noise?
Given the number of blade designs out there it doesn't seem like most are being intelligently designed.

Like most manufactured items the design is mostly based around ease and efficiency of manufacture, not on quality of the end product. I'm willing to bet fan blades on brand new boeing motors are probably pretty close too ideal. But there is a lot of competing forces in a fan blade and fluid mechanics is stupidly complicated. So no, fan blades are not a trivial solved problem

they used to make good fans you could pick up at walmart that had blades curve in some ways similar to a boat motor blade, but now they have flattened the fans and the blades are just a flat sheet with a weak fold to keep the product thinner so they can ship more. the new product is orders of magnitude a worse product in terms of quality and function
