You really believe that it does that? How did giving mass in languages people could actually understand turn out for the catholic church. Science will receive greater funding if people take researchers on their word, not if the public feels it's "informed" enough to know where to allocate funds.

Why is Bill Ney in that picture? Unlike the other three in the pictures, I don't think he has contributed anything groundbreaking to science as a whole. He's more of a public figure than a scientist.

How do you build that trust though? It's a similar situation to the ethics around animal testing. Researchers have to be super careful about not being wasteful with the lives of test animals and not causing undue suffering. Not because of any impact on the data itself, but to placate the masses who might be uncomfortable with the idea.

I'm not sure whether defending animal testing was ever an issue until science made a big deal about communicating what it does to the public. I suspect needing to defend the more shady side of science is more a consequence of pop-sci than really something pop-sci helps.

To be fair none of these people have any sort of groundbreaking contributions. They wouldn't be doing pop-sci if they were good at conducting research.

Better to be transparent about it. Imagine the blowback if some vegan activists recorded test animals being euthanized, and that was the only exposure the public had to the concept of animal testing.

It's true that vegans are a novel phenomenon and animal welfare was far less of a concern to people before. At the end of the day though, people know the meat industry is fucked up but most still gleefully indulge.

Pop-sci is a whole new level of ignorance, but it's worse since it's ignorance pretending to be deep knowledge. Pop-sci isn't about science, it's about surface level details of interesting results from science.
