As with all things I think female/male variance is in effect here. I've noticed the best and worst instructors were men while women more or less were average and non remarkable either way.

It's funny, I was just going to post the exact opposite of this. I think the female/male variance thing is weakened/reversed in this situation because the women who make it into STEM professorships tend to be extreme outliers, whereas there are more men closer to the average, since obsessive attraction to science is "more normal" for men to begin with.
Every time I've had a female prof she was either brilliant or completely incompetent. The only in-between was one who was very smart but I think has actual Asperger's and can't teach very well.
