I suspect the "gold" in alchemy means finding 'the truth". I've tried to to relate "vitriol separates gold" the fact that gold is incorruptible and the fact that we say that "vitriolic comments" are biting comments.
The earth think has been associated with the unconscious. I don't know if in this case its this or something else (it could be what we metaphorically say that something is "burried")
