Unless I specifically am making some point about powers of $x$ and want it to be clearer.
For inline, I write $5/x$ .

5x^-1 looks horrible, only useful as intermediate notation for calculus or manipulating equations

$5x^{-1}[\math] unless its about the fraction has some nice properties or its natural to write it like the $\frac{5}{x}$ eg $\frac{5x}{x}$ and then you make the $x$ dissapear, or mb if theres a huge block that youre dividing by and its the point of the formula$

$\frac{5}{x}$ is aesthetically more pleasing alone, but $x^{-1}$ notation works better while working through things where the exponent changes (calculus) and for units of measurement.
$mol \cdot L^{-1}$ looks way better than mol/L
