Consider corvids and many other birds that are as smart or smarter than apes despite theif tiny brains. Consider the octopus, which is extraordinarily intelligent despite seemingly primitive brain.
But that is nothing compared to insects and arthropods in general. Consider the tiny fruit fly with its barely visible brain that can do pretty much anything the typical mammal can do. Consider some of the social insects which seem to exceed any non human mammal in the level of organization and the ability to build stuff.
Some spiders seem to be capable of planning and inventing new tactics agains unknown pray; in fact the brain size does not grow with the spider size, which suggests there is just no good use for a bigger brain.
Which means really the question is why the hell do we need our mammoth brains and what do we use them for?
