we're learning more and more how rare it is for the right conditions to form to make life and how easy it is for life to be wiped out entirely. Also how rare complex life is to form (example being a eukaryotic cell merging with a bacterium that would become mitochondria happened as far as we know a single time.)
And we can see today how rare intelligence is and of that how few Intelligent animals have the biological tools to take their intelligence to the next level.
