But heavier than them. Someday Sol will be smaller than Mercury. But Jupiter will still orbit Sol, not the other way around.

You know OP, I was just thinking this the other day, and I wondered if we'd even landed anything on it. turns out we did, I may have known that at some point in the past but I've since forgotten. In fiction, 2061 (third novel in the Space Odyssey series) has a minor character known as the first man to set foot on Mercury.

whoops no it doesn't, I'm confusing Mariner 10 (Mercury, flyby) with one of the Vikings (Mars lander)

Mariner 10 did repeated flybys of Mercury, and then was left adrift in solar orbit
MESSENGER orbited Mercury until it ran out of propellant and then took a few years before it crashed into the surface

ESA just had to break quarantine because beppi columbo needed guidance during a breaking maneuver.
It's a very interesting planet, the problem is it is a pain in the ass to get there and not crash into the sun.

The theory I've heard the most was just a really big impact event early in the solar systems formation, and the majority of the debris fell into the sun.
But literally every single irregularity in the solar system has a theory about it getting smacked with something hard.
Why is uranus sideways? impact event!
Why does venus rotate so slowly? IMPACT EVENT!
Where did the moon come from? IMPACT EVENT SON!

Is it so hard to believe the early solar system was a chaotic and violent place and shit got smacked around alot?

I do think there is something more bizarre going on with Uranus though. It's rotation is too bizarre to be an impact event. Not to mention the craziness going on with it's moon system. If it was up to me the next big unmanned space project would be a Uranus probe.
