would it be possible to turn luminescent mushroom into a light that can be turned on and off somehow?

In a useful way, like flipping a light switch? Probably not.

You could potentially make then auxotrophic for a precursor to the luminescent reaction, and then starve them of the precursor to "turn them off," though.

If you want them to go back on you'd need a mechanism to remove the inhibitor though.

If it was unable to produce a precursor, all you'd need to do is add it back to the growth medium when you want them to start glowing again.

Genetically you could modify the mushroom to respond to some stimulus by illuminating. Sounds difficult. An easier solution would be to permeate the entire mushroom with a luminescent solution that could independently be turned on and off without affecting the mushroom
