The thing that is going to make the difference for you is if you can get somewhere to observe that has a dark night sky away from the light pollution of cities.
Also temper your expectations, you're not going to be seeing hubble quality images. Unless you're taking long exposures or have a CCD hooked up you're going to mostly see some hazy clouds with a tinge of color to them.
You can make out bands on jupiter, bulge of saturns rings, dark spots on mars, and the disc of jupiter pretty well though.
