That's where he invented the Science Guy persona. It was meant as a joke like his other characters such as the Speed Walker superhero or the Norwegian police chief. Turned out people in Seattle liked the Science Guy character so he did it more until it got turned into its own show for kids.
Eventually that show ended and he was a nobody again. As Gen-X aged, they started to indulge in nostalgia, and that's where Nye had his second chance at being in the spotlight. Problem was his fans were middle age adults now so his simple children's show couldn't work anymore.
He had to come up with something for adults while sticking with the Science Guy persona. That's where the Netflix special came in. Simplistic edgy science-ish sketches for the SJW era. That's what he was trapped into. Bill probably doesn't care about trannies and social justice. He just wanted to be in the spotlight again and this was a way to make it happen. Fame is a hell of a drug and having tasted it before, he wasn't going to let the chance to taste it again get away. All he had to do is toe the line of those paying to produce the show, no matter how silly their content.
