Few examples: surface reconstruction and topological noise removal for graphics, high-dimensional data analysis, manifold learning, computer vision, image processing, dimensionality reduction, information retrieval, motion planning, asynchronous computability theorem, etc

Yes. However, the amount of general topology that's useful for anything will be covered in a chapter of an analysis or algebraic topology textbook.
It's like set theory, or category theory. Every single mathematician needs a little bit of the basics, and then there are a few giga autists who spend their careers digging around in the guts of ridiculously artificial constructions that never show up in practice because they're so complicated you can barely construct them even if you try

Yet you intuitively can tell they're different
what if we had a dozen pieces of information for each datapoint, IE 12 dimensional data?
You can't visualize that. How do you know the "shape" of your 12 dimensional data?
You can use topology to have a computer understand that sort of thing
they've looked at old medial data-sets with topological techniques and discovered things missed, like varieties of cancer and such.

Doesn't matter. Few specific modern advances mean anything to the laymen or directly affect his life in a way that he'll actually notice.
When he gets a new shiny tool or toy, it's the result of hundreds of advances that he probably wouldn't see much value in.
