so they put Chernobyl in a concrete sarcophagus right?

why didn't they just build the sarcophagus in the beginning, just in case of a meltdown? would have saved everybody a whole lot of trouble.

Might not have helped when it exploded. Also if they had anticipated that failure mode they could have easily stopped it from happening entirely. There's reactors of the same design still operating today with comparatively minor safety retrofits. It was a huge systemic fuck-up basically.

why not just build massive sarcophaguses (sarcophagi(?)) around all reactors. make them strong enough to withstand the explosion

Because the whole purpose was to be cheap.

They could literally hotswap rods while the thing was running. without a container they could do maintenance much faster with little downtime

Powerful enough to destroy the sarcophagus probably. A full containment building, like other reactor designs usually have, I dunno.
Like >>11600140 said, the purpose of the design was to be cheap and bulky while *supposedly* not needing a huge containment structure that would be prohibitively expensive.

The thing I've always wondered about is after the built the sarcophagus why didn't they literally just fill the whole thing with concrete until it's just a solid encased block.
