If an object suddenly grew, what formula would you use to calculate the weight?

Say you had a glass marble with a diameter of .75in and a weight of 1 gram and it magically doubled to a 1.5in diamater, would it weigh 3 grams?

Volume and density.

Density = mass/volume
Volume of a sphere = 4/3*pi*r^3

The rest is trivial and left as an exercise to the reader.

There are two cases.

1. If density remains same (new mass is imported from the environment to the system), equation is trivial: m=p*V, where p is density of marble and V is volume.
V=(3/4)*Pi*r^3 in the case of sphere, where r=d/2.

In your case, new weight would be calculated like this:

m2/m1 = (p*(3/4)*Pi*r2^3) / (p*(3/4)*Pi*r1^3)
m2/m1=(r2^3)/(r1^3)
m2/m1=((d2/2)^3)/((d1/2)^3)
m2/m1=(d2^3)/(d1^3)
m2/m1=(1.5^3 / 0.75^3)
m2/m1 = 8

So, the new weight would be

m2=8m1=8*1gram=8grams.

2. If no new mass is imported from the environment to the system, density would change, and the mass would remain the same.

Why is it growing? You would expect the mass of it to remain constant, because generally the mass of things remains constant, but then generally objects don't spontaneously grow in size without something done to them.
