If we devoted the entire might of our culture to building the single biggest bomb possible, how big could we go? Could we destroy the earth?

Depends what you mean by "destroy". Literally rip into little giblets? No. You'd need trillions upon trillions of massive atomic bombs to do that. For example, the energy contained in the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs is estimated at something like like 100 million tsar bombas. And that only left a 100km dent.
Our current arsenal is enough to completely raze most of the surface and kill off the majority of life in the fallout though.

China and Us have about equal megatonnage in terms of nukes (chinese nukes are much bigger) around 450mt vs 550mt for US. Throw Russia into the mix, which has around 800mt. The rest are negligible.

Anyway combine all the thousands of existing nukes, and you get a 1-2 gigaton explosion.

For reference supervolcanos are in the teraton range.

p.s.s this was the biggest issue I had with the movie sunshine, which posited that we built a nuke that could restart our star by harvesting all the fissile material in earths crust.
