Title. I have the option to attend a very prestigious uni (pic related) as a physics major, but I would graduate with about 168k of debt. I intend on going to graduate school, but I don't know if that would be a possibility if I had that much debt. I also have the option to recieve 4 degrees in Math, Physics, Chem, and Engineering 100% debt free from my local state college. Which of these options, in your opinions, is the better one?

Do the degree in Physics at your local state college. Try to be the best in the class, and then apply for graduate school at very prestigious university. If someone from east Europe or India can get in graduate school, without paying a dollar, I assume you will be able to do it too.

i mean if you had a gun to your head to go to this prestigious uni and go in 168k debt or never go to uni this would certainly be worth it financially. but there's a third option that doesn't require remotely the same amount of debt that can easily end up with you in the same place if you have any sort of work ethic: a cheaper uni. and if you dont have a work ethic then you're saving yourself the money anyway because it would have went to waste.

Then file your own taxes (even if your income is zero or a few thousand only) and tell Chicago that your parents are assholes who don’t support you and are abusive. Chicago can then get FAFSA to consider you an independent adult and you go to school for free.

You could always commit and then figure out the financial aid later. You could also get married to a friend and even sign a prenup to ensure you don’t ever lose asset. This makes you an independent automatically.

A lot of people especially poor people like me got their financial aid in late because of loser parents who never filed on time. The colleges can and do and will reassign financial aid according to new info. Especially top notch private schools that have a lot of money. By comparison some public schools run out of financial aid.

I’m going to a top uni for mostly physics, but I transferred from a community college. My advice, go straight to the better school. I was the best at community but I wasn’t challenged enough, which made my first semester at top uni overwhelming. I’m on my second semester and I’m doing much better, but my gpa is relatively low and I only have two more semesters to bring it back up. If I was a freshman here I would have done poorly with a large pool of novices so my gpa would get curved in my favor, instead of doing poorly with a considerably smaller group of elite students

OP, I would say go to UC. despite the debt. despite what people say, pedigree does mean a lot. if you want to be a professor down the line have a prestigious uni on your resume does help a lot.
