the priority list of skills for r&d goes like this:
1. writing grant proposals
2. finding and compiling lots of sources into reports
3. actual implementation
4. slapping enough math on it, so it can count as research
math majors are in a unique position for 4, because your average engies shy away from formulas, and even when they do it doesn't carry the same weight. but that's maybe 5% of the whole effort. besides, when you're just putting your foot in the door, you'll be doing this as a code monkey (or using any other actionable, monetizable engie skill)
i did job fairs, and 90% of maths graduates i've spoken with are totally oblivious to the realities of the job market
