Guys like Roger Penrose for instance, he has done work in both pure maths and theoretical physics. Does this mean that mathematicians have more freedom in what they can do in their research areas than physicists?

So few people can actually do that consistently and make multiple discoveries. They are the ones who are remembered.

Well, what I'm saying is, Penrose is one of those kinds of people. As far as administrators or colleagues or policies putting pressure on you to do research in certain directions, you have to be able to identify the right path to follow to complete a discovery you think is important. You have to be able to navigate those pressures, or the result may never be completed. And you have to have identified it as important correctly. It's not easy by any means.

Durac majored in mathematics and specialized in physics later on, same for Ed Long Head Witten and that guy who won the nobel prize not so long ago but I can't remember his name.

Mathematical knowledge will give you an immense advantage as a theoretical physicist.

Take me, for example. My main interest is physics but I am majoring in applied mathematics because I prefer learning physics on my own and I want a really t h i c c mathematical toolbox.
