Trump didn't succeed in firing Dr. Messonnier but he really wanted to and threatened to.
>Dr. Rick Bright was suddenly deposed from his position as head of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, an agency at the center of government efforts to produce treatment and a vaccine for the coronavirus>Bright gave an explanation for his untimely departure: He believes he was pushed out for insisting on limits to the use of hydroxychloroquine, an unproven treatment that Trump has touted as a miracle cure for the virus. This part I got correct, however he alledges that Trump fired him for doubting hydroxychloroquine.
The part about Trump holding government workers hostage was hyperbole, and obviously so I hope, but there is an air of truth to it. It's true to say many people are worried Trump will find a way to retaliate against those who openly contradict him.
