first you start with addition tables, once you know 1+1 to 1000+1000 by heart, then you start on multiplication etc

the goal is either to find a new sum or product that has never been computed, or discover a new operation on numbers and explore the first few rows and columns of its table

What remains is either highly specialized or beyond our common mental abilities. Either way, you can see why anybody who isn’t a dedicated mathematician has little to no chance of success in modern mathematical research

Memorize some jargon and then use it to make word salad in LaTeX. Or you could think up a new idea and write about it, but that's hard.

Step 1: grab a paper from a reputed math journal written by people who know what they are doing.
Step 2: learn all the background stuff from the subject of the paper
Step 3: think about an unsolved problem that the paper suggests to work
Step 4: discover and publish new stuff.

Find a question and think about how to solve it. The easiest apples to grab are some kind of question that you can get a good grasp on using computer simulations since none of the ancients or classics would have been able to do that and so it's accessible even without much formal background..
