Hey guys, /mu/tant here. I had a question and I'm not sure if here was the place to ask it but I'll try anyway. Is there a reason why there are global quarantines in place in reponse to COVID-19, when other outbreaks like Ebola and H1N1 and SARS didn't have them? I'm not an expert in epidemiology or public health so I'm not sure why in this case it was done and not for the others. Thanks in advance.

-Ebola is far less contagious and not airborne. It mainly spread like wildfire in Sub-Saharan Africa because of cultural burial practices.
-SARS was so deadly that it killed people before they could really spread it, so it didn't take off much.
-COVID-19 strikes a really careful balance between not being /too/ lethal, but still being lethal enough that unmitigated spread would kill half a million Americans.

Different reasons for different diseases.
There's no need for mass social distancing with Ebola because Ebola is really goddamn hard to catch. Somebody basically has to cough blood in your face.
H1N1 was justaflu. Not even in the sense of "it's like the flu", it was literally a slightly worse flu.

COVID-19 is most similar to SARS, but the critical difference is that you could only really transmit SARS once you were seriously sick with it. So just tracking down and quarantining the coofers is sufficient to kill off the disease.
You can spread COVID-19 for days or sometimes weeks before you get sick, IF you even get sick at all. People can spread it who will never get a single symptom.
