A lot of bad teachers, shitty curriculum, and not taking into account juvenile brains have a hard time conceptualizing variables as a concept turn people off the subject. I hated math and thought it was pretty gay until I got a little older and started realizing that its a truly fascinating subject and I'm mad at myself for wasting all those years being too-cool-for-school.

other subjects you can cram the night before test and it doesn't matter how much you already know. you just memorize it and then forget it. but not math. it takes time to digest the material and if you missed a topic, you need to come back, otherwise you're fucked. people have a hard time accepting this.

Math isn't hard, but it requires work to understand. Stupid people can get reasonably good at math if they put the work in, but most people are lazy as well as stupid.
The same applies to most other intellectual disciplines.
