I've got a 20 page proof showing a new lower runtime bound for [redacted] that I don't have time to write up because I'm drowning in somewhat bullshit empirical papers that are funding my stipend.
There's some Kafka quote, I think, that says you need to perform a bunch of "little tricks" to actually work on the things that you think are important, like staying up later at night, so maybe this is just an excuse.
It is always hard to justify "hey let me work on this proof that no one asked me for but may be extremely impactful or may end up not working out" over "let me do the thing I'm being paid to do and will support my current PhD direction and is safe"
Of course, writing this now I'm thinking that I am just going to stop being a little bitch and do both.
