Has anybody else here struggled with O Chem? I'm in O Chem II and I just can't seem to learn the concepts involved in a satisfactory way from lecture or the textbook.
I've barely managed to get along on brute force memorizing, but I am starting to realize what a poor grasp I have on the fundamentals.
Any resources out there that you guys have found helpful for this material?

The Art of Writing Reasonable Reaction Mechanisms by Grossman is excellent. He includes 'common error alerts', basically he tells you how students fuck up particular problems with regularity, explains why it's wrong, and then gives a correct explanation. Problems vary widely in difficulty, don't beat your brains out over the hard ones, skip them.

For a more general book, one that includes some synthesis problems I like Karty's Organic Chemistry Principles and Mechanism.
In truth, a lot of sophmore level organic texts are more or less interchangable. If you don't like one author's treatment, just pick another book.

I was actually looking at getting Nuts And Bolts Of Organic Chemistry by Karty, I don't suppose you have an opinion on that? Seems to have good reviews from people in the same boat as me.

Have you tried thinking of those problems in terms of valence electrons and the periodic table?

That's part of it, I struggle to predict/ complete reactions properly due to lack of knowledge on how reagents and products actually interact. When give a new reagent I haven't seen before I find it difficult to figure out what it will do to the given starting molecule. Predicting stereochemistry is a battle, too.
I feel like understanding electrical interactions between molecules will help here but I'm not entirely sure as I am just taking stabs at the dark.

I think your intuition is correct, I come from a EE background though, never took Ochem.

But at the end of the day your molecules are either attracting or repelling, controlled entirely by electrical charges, thats it. Look for patterns in the electrical reactions and you might learn faster.
