Being able to visualize equations mentally is the most important arithmetic skill any aspiring mathematician must be able to master. It is not an innate ability dependant upon IQ, in fact processing speed has the lowest correlation to fluid intelligence of all the specific cognitive faculties. In order to be proficient at any STEM related subject you must understand the basic subjects by heart.
