Starting from high school, what are the best topics to learn everything about applied mathematics? I'd like to solve optimization problems in the real world. Should I study pure math in undergrad then move into applied for a master's? How much value should I place on getting a Ph.D if I want to work in industry? What other skills should I build up?

I don't necessarily care about the school. I only want to learn the material. The only reason for the school is to have some minimum level of validation when applying for jobs in the future. I do understand that the teaching ability of faculty can vary widely and state schools/community colleges may have worse professors or instructors but at the end of the day, math is math and universal.

I mean that some schools might not even offer applied courses beyond numerical analysis in undergrad. But if you want to do applied math I would recommend, beyond all the foundational pure math you need,

Numerical analysis
Linear programming
Nonlinear programming
Numerical linear algebra
Mathematical statistics
Stochastic process theory
Partial differential equations
Iterative methods
Finite difference/volume/element methods
Singular perturbation theory

Then don't. As long as you are learning and not just skimming the book, skipping exercises, then that's good. I wouldn't recommend going through more than 3 pages at at time as long as you do it everyday, maybe even 2 or 3 times a day with breaks in-between if you need to.

yeah but at that pace it always takes me a year to work through a textbook, they usually have like 1k pages, or at least 400
I'm not getting anywhere at that pace
I've never completed a textbook because of it
but it can't just be me right? how normal is it for someone to just sit down on the textbook for like 2-3 hours at a time consistently every day? how many people in 10000 can do that?
I'm not OP btw, I just got interested since I always see people give these lists of topics or textbooks which for me would take years, if not decades, to work through

6 pages a day for a 400 page book (standard size for a 1 semester course) would take a bit over 2 months, in school it takes 4 to not even go through the whole book. If we split the list I gave above into 16 400-page books, thats about 3 years. Completely doable.

For everything I gave above, all you really need is calculus, ODEs and baby PDEs, probability, linear algebra, and real analysis.

really? I've never been to uni so maybe that's the source of my confusion, maybe I'm setting too high expectations for myself, are you sure about that though?

Yes. Semesters last about 4 months, and teachers usually skip both the least useful things and the hardest things in the book. The best way to organize what to read is to look at old syllabi from a university's website.

Not everyday but students do this a few days a week for harder courses, at least I did. It's different when you have homework due and the pressure of preparing for exams. On my own like you said 1 hour a few days a week takes a lot of discipline. Like you said with finishing books, the hard part is when you're hundreds of pages in and realize you're not getting as much out of it as you thought you would. I think there are places online you can go to work with other people through stuff? I'm sure that would help.
