What should have been implemented early on but wasn't is contract tracing, case isolation, active surveillance and ramping up manufacturing of PPE.
When it became apparent that covid19 was embedded in the US population (i.e. evidenced by several confirmed cases without travel history to China, Italy or Iran) social distancing measures should have swiftly come into effect.
Private healthcare companies should have been ordered to treat any patients with flu-like symptoms without charge, and tests should have been made available to anyone with symptoms.
As a result of the USA's unpreparedness and glacial response it is now the worst affected country.
