what useful things can be done on the moon?

pic related is from a proposal for a radio telescope. good idea because the far side of the moon is shielded from electromagnetic noise coming from earth.

any other reasons for going to the moon? can anything useful be mined there?

You'd have to actually get there first. Until you do there's no point in considering building something there.

Besides maybe Helium 3 collection and a shipyard there isn't realy much you can do there that can't reasonably be done somewhere else.
However to make use if Helium 3, you would need to develop fusion reactors first.
