I've thought about this a lot, I think it's that humans needs stimulation like anything. We are living in an overly stimulated environment due to our advanced technology and especially the internet which leaves people without any need to be stimulated. without that need people become less creative, less impulsive, less improvisational, because they don't need the excitement from doing that anymore. everyone is getting their fix from social media and netflix like rats in a skinner box pressing a lever. i also think overpopulation has a lot to do with it. i think people's behavior becomes qualitatively different when they see themselves as part of a group of 9 billion instead of 900 or 9000. people before the internet really did not see themselves as part of a group so large they couldn't manage unless they were severely socially awkward. people didn't think about life outside of their immediate group of a few hundred people. now we are constantly overwhelmed by the idea of 9 billion or whatever it is.

Everyone I interact with has an initial starting point and depending on how far they are from what I can predict/project is what I judge the initial difficulty curve of integration.
