Pardon my ignorance but should we be able to see all of these satellites in the sky right now (Chicago)?

I have seen about 8 total in the past 30 mins. First a cluster of 3 moving NE, a set of 2 moving SSE, 2 more moving NE, and a single satellite moving S.

Any ideas? I don't know which resources to look at to find out more info about this.

Yes, however many satellites (EG musks starlink) are now incorporating a light absorbing paint surface to help hide them from ground observation.

Are these satellites observed by telescope, naked eye, or some other type of sensor?

Yes. Look for glints. Use a long term photo (15 minutes +) and look for long streaks.
