Is it worth studying anything science or math related if you think your iq is just average? Would I be wasting my time?

I do genuinely enjoy learning things, but I always end up getting distracted/brain fog. I think I've mostly been able to solve problems if I don't get distracted/brain fog but it does take me awhile. Like almost like my brain is just lagging. It's very soul crushing.

Is it worth even attempting to learn or is this a waste of time and I should just go do a factory job or something?

I spend a decade in special eds, you will find that as you learn more and put more effort in it you will actually enable yourself to do even more at a lower effort. Its like going to the gym only the model is not as simple, you learn methods to and get better at parsing information which makes things easier.

I don't know. I feel like I'm getting slower. I didn't do shit for most of my earlier 20's. I'm not sure what exactly measures intelligence but I feel like I don't solve problems very fast. Some people claim they can multiply and add huge numbers in their head or solve big logic riddles with no paper. If these are the people that are in these fields learning these things is there even a point? No way my brain can get to that point no matter how hard I try. depends, is the field solving pointless puzzles and showing off or actually getting things done? I dont know you and what you want to do but I do know that most of the things you are talking about are lone talents of people attained by years of work and they dont have everything either just that.

Do they? I mean it seems like they function and do other things with themselves but on top of that just can do crazy shit I could never even comprehend. I can't even imagine what it's like to stare at a problem with 20 different parts and just know the answer in seconds. That's what it seems like these STEM majors who get good jobs do.

Sure you have people like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_von_Neumann and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Pitts but even those (especially the latter) are deeply obsessed with the things they care about and focus, which as far as I know is the key.

its not really worth the time tho, mentat wiki has some other cool stuff like this if you're interested.

Some savant abilities seem to come from the brain being wonk (see Kim Peek, the guy who rainman is based on) but those people are almost always retarded or have other mental issues (think law of the communicating vessels, you give up some portion of the total resources the brain has and dedicate it to doing X instead of its normal function).

I recommend reading the book: moonwalking with einstein. if you want to learn some cool techniques which you can use to better utilize the mental faculties you have. A plain obvious example of techniques which expand your given capabilities is that you can count in binary on your fingers to count up to 1027 on your hands rather than 10.

this guy taught himself how to do speed mental calculation, there is also some child prodigy who learned the skill to win quizzes and be famous who is very forthcoming. If you compare cases like this you can see that the person who learned it as a child needs to rely on less mental constructs because its deeper ingrained but thats about it. This kid had no autism or anything else but just decided to do it, same for a lot of people with savant abilities (mostly its trauma that causes their obsession as a means to escape reality or to distract (autistic people are almost always traumatized by existing)). Some people develop the ability to remember what they did at any point in time simply because they moved as a child and want to remember what their home is like so they obsessively categorize their memories and constantly pay attention to them. People with "photographic" memories report having a constant afterimage and are always visualizing things they have seen before when they close their eyes. People with acquired savantism generally get hit in the left temporal lobe and develop obsessions which lead to the savant abilities.

You have to understand that a truly deep seated obsession with something haunts you day and night and forces you to see every detail of it, you can synthesize this if you dedicate yourself and get very far.

I appreciate the well thought out response anon. Might be worth a shot to give certain things a whirl and see if improve. I just want to learn a lot of things and there's not a lot of time (or brain power) that I have. While high iq's can learn everything they want in a year and solve complex problems at work with ease.

This did not work for me. Weights didn't feel any lighter. I found out that the problem was the fact that I can't build muscle. Perhaps people with mediocre iq can't build neuronal connections or some shit, in which case OP would be wasting his time indeed

but the things which are tested on on IQ tests you can improve at, as I understand it IQ tests just test for certain models which you should have accumulated over the years to indicate your development in comparison to others. Might be worth the time to figure the exact points IQ tests measure and how IQ tests are made.

intelligence is not measurable as a whole as its an abstract concept but some quantifiable measures of it (IQ) is, improving those measures might also improve intellect.

My IQ went up 6 points after I started taking methylphenidate but I could barely study and could not tell the difference between left and right before then (probably also lacked a lot of other basic skills). If you don't have certain basic skills you will see a lot of difference by learning those.

There are people dumber than you with STEM degrees. It's about the work you're willing to put in and how much time you'll dedicate to it. Once you make it out of academia, engineering isn't really that hard anyways. There's programs and simulators for most difficult engineering tasks now (and I'd imagine it's similar for other STEM fields), limits the risk for human error. Most of those quiet, super-smart, awkward savant type kids don't do to well in the actual STEM field. Engineering is all about creativity, teamwork, communication, and pitching ideas now. The era of quiet geniuses like Bill Gates revolutionizing the world alone in their mom's basement is over.

I do believe this, but I also believe I am not that smart either and would just be a burden at a job compared to smarter people.

Where I used to work I watched lawyers and engineers come in and be absolutely baffled by a coffee machine (the mars one with the packets). You'd see them doing all sorts of crazy shit with the machine despite the directions being right up top. Even without them it's not that difficult. I'm sure people with high intelligence/iq wouldn't have an issue looking at and figuring out how to make coffee.

Dont go in and outright say "i have ADHD gimme meds." You should tell the doctor that you have troubke focusing and also talk about your other symptoms and that you would like to get tested. Make sure to tell the doctor that your mental state is causing you alot of distress and you are feeling suicidal, which is like the mental equivalent of overselling your symptoms so the goddamn doctor will see you in the next 10 hours at the emergency room if youre lucky. From here theres 2 things that can happen:

1. The doctor says ok and reffers you to a psychiatrist who will then perform adequate testing
2. If you go all in with the suicide angle (eg. Give a time you want to kill yourself and how) that indicates you are a serious case and the doctor may put you in the hospital.

Option 2 is risky and of course interferes with your everyday life, but meeting with doctors is much more streamlined. Option 1 is slower but is morally superior and leaves beds open for patients who are actually suicidal or a danger to themselves and others (unless you are then do get help).

The best way to get over that is to just force yourself to pay attention, and you will get better over time. Turning off your phone also helps.
