Is there some reason birdstrike can't be prevented by affixing conical cage structures to the fronts of jet engines and propellars?
At the very least it would bread the birb up a little.

It would restrict airflow. It'd need to be made of strong material not just to resist the bird strike but also to resist the engine trying to suck it in. Any failure on the cage would result in part of it flying into the engine. Also keep in mind the speed at which a bird gets sucked in make the force of the impact massive. A cage that could keep a bird from flying into a stationary object wouldn't work due to the much higher forces involved. In the end you'd have a massive heavy cage that restricts too much airflow, creates a FOD hazard, and still doesn't stop much of the bird from getting into the engine.

bird strikes aren't even a big deal, most commercial jets kill several thousand birds on every flight, the only ones you ever feel are the bigger ones like seaguls and owls. flying through a flock of cranes (they're migrating right now) can be a really rough ride.

Nope, restricting airflow wouldn't be too nice, neither would the cage falling into the propeller. You could, however, stick a tube into the middle of the engine and sensors on the outside to detect when a bird flies in, open the hatch and then send the bird scraps into an oven in the plane then feed it to the passengers.

Your mechanism is all wrong. Airplanes kill birds because they launch out thousands of cats during descent. The reason for this is that cats always land on their feet. The more cats launched, the smoother the landing. Airplanes only crash when landing if they run out of cats. The real issue here however is that cats kill millions of birds. When thousands are launched during a descent, millions of birds are killed by the cats.
