But keep in mind that we are a species that thinks in the short-term and are all getting more and more signs that long term planning is pointless. Social norms go wonky at the best of times, and technological change produces generational gaps etc. No one is minding the store while it burns, oh well.

The heavy downsizing of the middle class has had an effect. Setting your kids up with a (monetarily) stable older person is as much of a crap shoot as having them nail a teenager with uncertain prospects. When is the last time you saw a millionaire trying to **marry** a teenager in industrialized society? They can just nail 3rd world jailbait for *pocket change*. Hence the trend.
