archive.vn/ZLMNrWuhan-like virus discovered seven years ago
"For years, Zheng-Li Shi and her colleagues at the Wuhan Institute of Virology have been isolating coronaviruses from horseshoe bats in caves in China's Yunnan province. In 2013, they found a coronavirus that could infect human cells in the lab. Last week, Shi reported that this virus is 96 per cent identical to the Covid-19 virus now spreading in people."
These viruses from the horseshoe bats weren't actually able to infect human cells until...

The researchers took those viruses similar to SARS and used gene manipulation tools to splice in HIV-genes or something similar to make the SHC014 viruses infect human cells. The chimera virus they created, is just 12% different from the original virus.

"In this study, we investigated the receptor usage of the SL-CoV S by combining a human immunodeficiency virus-based pseudovirus system with cell lines expressing the ACE2 molecules of human, civet, or horseshoe bat."

"Using the SARS-CoV reverse genetics system2, we generated and characterized a chimeric virus expressing the spike of bat coronavirus SHC014 in a mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone."
I think scientists, and I've encountered some on /sci/, said Zhengli Shi's research team predicted that bat coronaviruses would mutate and infect humans. But the SARS-CoV-2 virus wreaking havoc all over the world has HIV-like mutations. I don't know if the researchers were saying that the bat coronavirus would have HIV-like mutations that make them infectious, they were just saying that the bat coronaviruses would jump from bats to humans.
