Are rail-to-rail opamps a meme? Here's one that calls itself rail-to-rail but also explicitly states it can't handle inputs within 1.15 of the rails. This isn't the first time I've seen a rail-to-rail opamp that's actually really shitty near the rails but this is just stupid.

Programming arduinos is not EE, its highschool science at best.

Build your own circuit with bare parts, no bullshit bootloader or happy funtime IDE so you can use a realtime debugger? That's closer to EE.

Building components from scratch as opposed to using basic components doesn't compare to using the 'duino family vs. basic stuff.

The arduino is for learning and basic stuff. You can grab a sense of programming and embedded design from the pre-made shields and libraries in the IDE.
Once you can do those, you need to break away from the pre-engineered boards and do your own design and real coding.
I see too often people trying to build something with an adruino, using its IDE, to make something worth selling. Its inefficient, clunky, and not as customizable as you think.

Lose the copy-and-paste mindset as an argument. There is a reason that 'duinos don't power mass production devices, or high power applications.

presumably the potentiometer sets the bias voltage. 2x inverting unity amplifiers = 3.3V as a "virtual ground." However, the second amplifier isn't exactly unity gain, since R_pt146 is unknown.
The +59mV is the difference in (+)reference voltages (zener+unknown for U1, zener voltage for U2) created by the electrode.
The thermisistor appears to be temperature compensation of some sort, but you'll have to figure that out yourself.

If you want embedded experience, you need an ARM based microcontroller. STM32 or TI microcontrollers are axcellent at giving you real embedded experience.

I made the mistake of putting together my capstone project using a fuckign arduino. Guess how impressive that looks on my resume when I apply to embedded systems jobs. Literally filler tier. I'm working on a solo project using a TI TM4C123 board to get rid of that project from my resume altogether.

He needs a BS in ENGINEERING to do those things. If he had gone onto a four year program in ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY then he would have spent an extra two years on a degree that would have still failed to qualify him as more than a technician in the eyes of industry and, more importantly, the engineering boards (So four years and no EIT and no PE). At least he can start over and transfer his english credits to an engineering school so he will only have spent 5 to 6 years getting the right BS.

I like the idea of this general, even if it overlaps a bit with /diy/ohm/, but with a focused aspect on theory rather than projects it could work. That being said, could it be a feasible idea to include a guide to bench instruments in the OP? Like recommended oscilloscopes, bench multimeters, soldering irons, microscopes, etc... for different price ranges? /ohm/ lacks that after all.

I vote STM32. Soldered my own boards and wrote some code. A lot of fun and a true DIY feel and a great learning experience. Arduino is OK as a starter project but you need to move on quickly to something more serious. Arduino is like playing with legos compared to doing real woodwork/metalwork.

yes, thats my thought exactly. i used to to ask too many theoretical questions on /ohm/ and it just didn't feel right, like talking about complex numbers and FFT and LT and convolutions etc. however, we DID have some good theoretical discussions there but i am yet to see anything similar in this thread...

How do I get into FPGA/digital logic as efficient as possible? I'm using a Zybo board and Xilinx tool chain. I want to do signal processing, reading from a sensor, possibly using AXI4 Stream and the XADC Core from Xilinx.
I'm a software programmer. Started by learning some VHDL, doing some basic functions, learned about AXI protocol, how to work with on-chip ARM cores and IP Integration but it seems overwhelming and I don't understand how the signals work between IP and my VHDL code.

Resources seem to be scarce or not very well made. Any suggestions?

I couldn't do it without looking anything up but using behavioral design and shit, I could. I watched some VHDL tutorial on youtube, implemented a design to have the LED blink in a specified frequency.
I understood how to implement a state-machine based design in VHDL and shit and then continued on because the signal processing is the task I have to do for a project thesis.
Supervisor doesnt know shit about FPGAs and I have to explain all of it scientifically.

And I am probably to far down the road to do a 180 now. I know it is a lot but I feel like the VHDL is not the problem, I can do it with some time. I don't understand all basic things perfectly like adders/multipliers/muxes/decoders etc. but I have some idea. My problem is how to integrate my VHDL into the systems and interface IP such as XADC/DRAM via AXI and such.
My VHDL should the integrate a pressure signal and possibly write to DRAM to be visualized by the ARM core.
I have taken about 2 months from 0 knowledge until now and my supervisor is a MEng with some arduino knowledge and thinks I'm stupid if I don't make it soon.

HELP

PS: I implemented mixed precision linear solvers on GPU with OpenCL, and OpenCL was my motivation for FPGAs but realized this was also too advanced

Maybe learn how to make things using circuitry if you want to into EE.
making circuits is just programming but you need a large area to make complex machines, hence where state storage comes in.
C will only help once you understand what you're doing.

I mean, i have a kinda lucky situation for the following reasons:
-theres very few people that study EE at my uni
-hes one of the few remaining profs that do research on my country
-I have taken 3 classes with him so far and ive topped all of them with really really good scores
-on various occasions he has publicly acclaimed my work on projects with the class

Fair enough. Peak-to-peak value of any signal is positive peak minus negative peak. That's it. Also, if you have a periodic signal with DC and harmonics components on it, I suggest you to use FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) or Fourier Analysis to get the values of each one and get the total RMS value of the signal. Read the Introductory Circuit Analysis of Boylestad, that book makes a nice approach to the relevant values of any signal. Good luck, lad.

I've never done any GPU work, so I can't really compare it to HDL/FPGA design. You gotta understand you're modeling hardware, its not software. This is why understanding digital logic is essential to model the hardware you would do in IC's in a software environment like Quartus or Xilinx. I'm only an engineering tech major so we weren't taught how to conduct that analysis. These are the formulas we were given. Then the professor asks us to convert a 100-watt peak-to-peak output power to rms output power. These classes have been difficult for me with remote learning since these labs actually come from an upper division EE undergrad course from the local university so our textbook doesn't cover much of it with a multiple choice question that makes you choose "none of the above" since the solutions are 25, 50, 100 or 200 watts. I always end up overthinking problems when the choices don't include the answer I solve for. So I kept trying to manipulate the formulas to come up with something that matches. But what you're saying makes perfect sense.

My Circuits II class had this project where you had to build an circuit simulator from scratch using C++ and should have less than 5kB of size. You could use an external plotter for graphics. If you want to delve a little bit more into electronics perse, check out Microelectronics Circuits by Sedra Smith, and if my memory serves me right Boylestad has a book focused on electronic components as well. I don't agree with this. You will fail if you start with all the theory. Just get a good foothold on basic AC/DC circuits, Electronics, and some digital. Then build stuff. Work on developing the math in between. Eventually you'll run into stuff in signal processing where you'll need more advanced math and you can learn it as you design practical circuits at the same time which really helps reinforce it.

/sci/ just has the collective problem where they go way too hard on the book learning and I think that has the effect of putting people off and making them feel bad about themselves if they're struggling. Also it doesn't really teach you everything you need to know. There are some things you can only learn by building projects and others you can only learn when things go wrong. This is a huge component everyone ignores. Don't wait until you're done with book learning to build practical circuits. Start IMMEDIATELY.

I am gonna be transfering soon as an EE. I finished all my stem courses at community college and this semester I was taking the last of my GEs to focus on setting everything up to transfer. That's still the problem. A pre-fabbed development board with extra bullshit on it, just plug and go doesn't teach much.
My intro to microcontrollers course started with a workbench covered in bare components, a breadbard, and a datasheet. We built our own boards from the ground up and used it for the class.
Thats how you learn how things work, connect each piece and learn how everything interacts together.

href is not always in 10^2, TIP power transistors have 15 href, for example. It's a matter of materials, semiconductor junctions. This amplification os not out of nowhere, you must apply a voltage to supply an electric field that will move a certain quantity of electrons(or holes). The kind of junction you're using will dictate how many of them are "floating" and available to flow when that votlage is applied.

By the way, I don't think it is because the ADC has selected the value with less error, since by calculation, that is still 90 decimal or 5AH. I think it is going to the closest value in multiples of 1LSB that doesn't exceed -1.5V. So by virtue of it being so close to that middle point, there is an expectation of error (but it won't ever exceed 1 discrete count). Because running the numbers, it is either going to assume Vin is -1.52344V or -1.48438V, and the later value would correspond to 90. But it would also be greater than the sampled value, so it goes with the value it knows doesn't exceed Vin. At least, that's what it looks like from where I'm sitting.

Definitely has to do with how the ADC approximates values

I'd argue having practical knowledge is always more useful. No engineer sits around and hand derives out Laplace transforms and transfer functions. That is shit you only do in classroom exercises. In real life software does all that and the human just needs to vaguely understand what's going on and interpret the data. In does require an underlying knowledge of the mathematics but it's not a direct application of them.

I disagree. When you make a circuit you should know what it is supposed to do before you even build it. Maybe for low frequency shit you can get away with handwaving a lot but in my line of work the hardware is expensive to manufacture and test so we spend a lot of time deriving the mathematical expressions before ordering the part

Ill take a swing at this, because I'm an asshole when taking tests and I build audio crap a lot.
For starters, the question is a mess. The question says a car amplifier - which 99% of the time is 12-ish volts. Given, cars can be 24 volts, or modern electric cars are much much higher, so I guess ignore that.
Now, the output (RMS) is 100 watts at 4 ohms. RMS is the "constant music power" calculated from the average output peak power multiplied by 0.707. Reversing that gives us a peak power of about 141 watts.
141 peak watts into 4 ohms is around 23.8v (at 5.95 amps).
Here's the problem. This is a Class-AB amplifier. They are not 100% efficient, not 90%, not even 80%. It actually depends on how well its built. Most class-AB amps should be around 59%-78%. So its a little hard to exactly say what the minimum voltage should be. You could assume 59%, but I've seen lower.

Now comes my inner test taking jerk-off.
Almost all car stereos operate on 12v+(up to 14.4, but fuck you). The question asks what the minimum power supply voltage is. Saying 12V would technically be correct. Inside the car stereo amp (as clearly stated in the question) is an SMPS that boosts the voltage for the transistors to drive the speaker. Now, it asked for the amp power supply, which is 12V as a whole. But if you want to argue he meant the transistor amplification part of the circuit, car amps generate a positive and negative voltage so that the class-AB amp does a real push-to-V+ and pull-to-V- with respect to ground. Not a "single supply" class-AB that biases V+ to ground for a pseudo V+/V- on output.
Also, the questions states the amplifier is "stereo" which means it has multiple channels. Is it 100Wrms per channel, or for the whole amplifier, as most amps are advertised as? A 2-chanel amp that pushes 50Wrms into 4ohms for each channel is still 100Wrms total, but will generate a very different answer.
TLDR; The question is stupid and flawed, more info needed.

Thanks Anons. I ended up talking about SMPS being used, since the 12v car battery wouldn't be enough, so glad to see that you brought that up. Hopefully the professor isn't too critical since the question was very vague, definitely wasn't supported by any example problems in the text. It is from an EE class but just copy pasted into our EET lab manual so difficult for me to grasp

My Linear Circuit Theory final is in 12 days and I'm freaking out because
1. I do not know my full grade as an exam I took before the pandemic has still not been graded
2. I got a 20% on a test worth 14% of my full grade because I don't understand Phasors that well
3. My homework grade is likely very low as it's an all or nothing system judged by a computer, meaning if you don't get it exactly right you get a zero, and every failed attempt takes a point off your grade for the assignment.

Admittedly I have fault as I don't usually study as often as I should, but I've really been trying to make the effort with transient functions recently and I still have trouble. I just want a C-, but unless I get an 80+ on my final it doesn't look good for me.

I can do it, I just need more time. I've retaken two courses and both times I went from D's to B's with a much better understanding than when I first took it because I remembered enough to keep up with the lectures. I'm still struggling to get used to such a fast pace, I guess.
