It's easy to tell once you know you're dreaming, you stop following the "script" and can do whatever the fuck you want. Changes to the dream are made through and exertion of will or at least that's my case.

dreams don't trick me.
Once I was stuck in a loop, walking on a looping pathway with the same dead end every time and when I got to the end I'd lose my memory. I somehow figured it out, so I left myself a note on the way before I'd lose my memory again so I'd be able to climb out of the pathway after reading the warning note next time.
Usually my dreams are trying to show me something though.
I also sometimes just dream about simple stuff like flashing images of dead people, laughing rotting people or a bleeding face staring at me.
